The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), today charged Nigerians to rise to the occasionand join hands to stop the elected leaders bent on destroying public universities and squandering Nigeria’s wealth. This also came as the academic union called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on the poor condition of public universities in order to rescue the sector from outright collapse. The University of Ibadan Chairperson of ASUU, Prof. Ayoola Akinwole, stated this Wednesday, during a press conference held at the Large Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan. The press briefing, which was centred on the current four-week roll-over total strike declared by the National Executive Council (NEC) is titled: “A Call to Rescue Our Public Universities From Total Collapse”.

ASUU strike: Nwajiuba says FG working on alternative funding structure for universities The Nigerian government is currently working on proposals it can use to resolve the ASUU strike, including a new scheme in which universities implement a different way of earning funds. This was disclosed by Emeka Nwajiuba, former Minister of State for Education and a presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in an  interview  with Channels TV on Sunday. He stated that the implementation of alternative funding structures is a necessity for university autonomy. What the former minister is saying Nwajiuba apologised to Nigerian students for the continued strike, taking responsibility as their minister. “On behalf of the FG, we want issues to be understood. We have had nearly 15 strikes in 20 years. Ukrainian president, Volodymr Zelensky said on Wednesday March 16, peace talks with Russia were becoming 'more realistic' but more time is needed for any deal to be in the interests of Ukraine.    Zelensky made the early morning statement after his team said a peace deal that will end Russia's invasion of Ukraine will be struck with Vladimir Putin within one or two weeks because Russian forces will run out of fresh troops and supplies by then.   'The meetings continue, and, I am informed, the positions during the negotiations already sound more realistic.
