The Associated Press Ukrainian soldiers walk next to destroyed Russian... Read More KYIV, Ukraine -- Russian troops left the heavily contaminated Chernobyl nuclear site early Friday after returning control to the Ukrainians, authorities said, as eastern parts of the country braced for renewed attacks and Russians blocked another aid mission to the besieged port city of Mariupol. Ukraine’s state power company, Energoatom, said the pullout at Chernobyl came after soldiers received “significant doses” of radiation from digging trenches in the forest in the exclusion zone around the closed plant. But there was no independent confirmation of that. The exchange of control happened amid growing indications the Kremlin is using talk of de-escalation in Ukraine as cover to regroup, resupply its forces and redeploy them for a stepped-up offensive in the eastern part of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russian withdrawals from the north and center of the country we...

The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted of a sinister plan to stoke violence in parts of Nigeria, particularly the North Central. Peter Afunanya, the Public Relations Officer raised the alarm in a statement on Saturday. The spokesman said the aim was to cause ethno-religious crisis, ignite reprisals and heat up the polity. The DSS said the sponsors have mobilised foot soldiers and held several meetings in and outside the target areas. The agency said students, striking lecturers, labour unions, disgruntled individuals and strategic groups are to be used “to exploit the global energy situation to carry out a mass protest like the ENDSARS.” Afunanya noted that this is despite ongoing efforts by the government to address the issues. The DSS disclosed it was trailing “the agents of destabilisation who are desirous of using violence to achieve ulterior goals”. The statement warned, “the ring leaders and their cohorts to desist from acts capable of causing a breakdown of law and o...
BY EKENE OBI The Federal Government on Tuesday assured that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, would be called off soon, saying it was taken aback by the renewed strike which university teachers embarked on February 14, 2022. Addressing the resumed conciliation meeting with the Union, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said the government was surprised ASUU negated the understanding and assurances it gave through the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar and the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Supo Ayokunle. Quoting Senator Ngige, Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, Charles Akpan, who was in Botswana for the meeting of the African Regional Labour Administrative Centre, ARLAC, when ASUU declared action, the Minister said he thought the university teachers and their employer, the Ministry of Education would have resolve...

We have had nearly 15 strikes in 20 years. ASUU has a case, they are making a case for the entire university system,” he said. “The only problem is that we have asked ASUU that strikes can’t cure the problem....
