but unsurprisingly there are huge gaps in the story

'Oldest woman alive' goes viral on TikTok

A startling rumour circulated online that the oldest woman alive has reached the incredible age of 399.

So how old are they actually and is this whole thing a hoax?

Does the 399-year-old woman exist?

Of course the images are a hoax. If a person had lived to nearly 400 years on this planet, scientists would be itching to discover her secrets and historians desperate to document her takes on anything from the French Revolution to the outbreak of World War One.

Some scientists believe that the maximum life span of a human is 150 years, according to one study.

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology's Peter Fedichev, research and senior author of the study, said in Inverse: "What we’re saying here is that the strategy of reducing frailty, so reducing the disease burden, has only an incremental ability to improve your lifespan."

This means that even with the most healthy lifestyle possible and a large portion of good luck, people can only live for a certain amount of time.
