Flood wreaks havoc  in Imo, victims seek help Erosion has caused massive destruction in Okai village, Eziama community in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State. Eziama is the hometown of a former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Collins Chiji. The erosion was caused by heavy rainfall witnessed in the state on Monday. Strike: FG mulls proscription of ASUU

To approach National Industrial ind ications emerged yesterday that the Federal Government may consider the option of proscribing the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU if it fails to call off the prolonged strike after an offer was made to it. The Federal Government has also approved an additional N100 billion for the university sector as part of the understanding in the re-negotiation of the 2009 Agreement. Besides, N50 billion was equally approved to be shared by the university-based unions as earned allowances. The four university-based unions that have been agitating for the payment of earned allowances are ASUU, which calls its own Earned Academic Allowances, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the Non-Academic Union of Education and Associated Institutions, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT. Strike continues as ASUU NEC fails to suspend action

The industrial action by members of the Academic Sftaff Union of Universities, ASUU, will continue as members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union did not consider the option of suspending the action at its meeting which ended in the early hours of Monday in Abuja. Checks by Vanguard showed that the national leadership of the union only briefed the meeting on their interactions and submissions made to the Prof. Nimi Briggs Committee set up the Federal Government to renegotiate the 2009 Agreement with the union. A source said the leadership also told the meeting about the intervention of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in the matter and the subsequent nationwide solidarity rallies held by the Congress and its affiliates last week. “Since there is no sign of any serious commitment on the part of the government, there was no need for the NEC to consider suspending the strike. APC cancels NEC meeting

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has cancelled the proposed emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 17. The decision to cancel the meeting may not be unconnected to the  letter written by President Muhammadu Buhari , which directed Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni to return as the chairman of the caretaker committee. Recall that the acting chairman of the Caretaker Committee and the Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Bello, had summoned the emergency meeting. The emergency meeting was supposed to ratify decisions taken in respect of the forthcoming national convention of the party. The National Secretary of the party, Sen. John Akpanudoedehe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
