ASUU STRIKE TO SOON -FG

The Federal Government on Tuesday assured that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, would be called off soon, saying it was taken aback by the renewed strike which university teachers embarked on February 14, 2022.
Addressing the resumed conciliation meeting with the Union, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said the government was surprised ASUU negated the understanding and assurances it gave through the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar and the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Supo Ayokunle.
Quoting Senator Ngige, Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, Charles Akpan, who was in Botswana for the meeting of the African Regional Labour Administrative Centre, ARLAC, when ASUU declared action, the Minister said he thought the university teachers and their employer, the Ministry of Education would have resolved the areas of disputes within days.
According to him, “I sincerely thought ASUU and the Ministry of Education would have resolved the issues, which hopefully are not major areas of dispute, warranting industrial action. To my surprise, I came back, and the strike is still on. Be that as it may, it is the mandate of my Ministry to apprehend industrial disputes wherever they occur and we have apprehended this.

EFCC detains VON boss, Osita Okechukwu over alleged ₦1.3bn fraudBy Guardian Nigeria

Osita Okechukwu The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Saturday detained the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) Osita Okechukwu. Okechukwu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, was reportedly detained over a case of conspiracy, abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of ₦1.3 billion. The VON D-G was said to have arrived the headquarters of the anti-graft agency in Abuja at about 1.30 pm on Saturday to honour an invitation. He was still with operatives of the agency as of the time of filing this report. The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the invitation of the VON chief executive but declined to provide further details.

Warmer autumns could spell bad news for butterflies, suggests study

Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain New research finds that longer and warmer autumns make it less likely that green-veined white butterflies will survive winter to emerge in spring. The findings are published in the British Ecological Society journal,  Functional Ecology . warmer and longer autumn conditions lost more weight and used more energy than those exposed to milder conditions. Although the butterflies didn't die immediately under the more elevated conditions, the researchers found that those that experienced them were less likely to survive to adulthood the following spring. Dr. Matthew Nielsen at the University of Oulu, who conducted the research at Stockholm University, said: "Climate change is making autumns warmer and last longer, and it was this specific combination of conditions that had the greatest impact on the butterflies in our study. Leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) led by its’ President, Biodun Ogunyemi Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo (1909 – 1987) was Premier of the Western Region from 1952 to1959, seven years in total, yet the profound influence he has on Nigerian education lingers on from the 20th to the 21st Century. ASUU declares indefinite strike, plans increased media engagement

ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke The Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared a total and indefinite strike. The decision was taken at a meeting of the union’s National Executive Council held on Sunday in Abuja. The PUNCH  reports that the union started its ongoing strike on February 14, 2022. The strike is in protest against the government’s failure to release revitalisation funds for universities, failure to release the white paper report of the visitation panel to universities and the failure to deploy the University Transparency Accountability System for the payment of salaries and allowances of lecturers. The Boeing 737 plane crashed in the rural countryside near Wuzhou city, Guangxi region, and “caused a mountain fire”, CCTV said, citing the provincial emergency management bureau. The report added that rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. CCTV said a “China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 plane carrying 133 people has crashed in Teng county, Wuzhou, Guangxi, and caused a mountain fire.”
